Modern
Hibernation

Yarn, ice and frozen flowers in the Modern Hibernation mood direction

Intro

Modern Hibernation is an unproduced interview project developed for the Alanui FW 2026/27 selection process.

The project explores knitwear as a protective and textural language, translating the idea of a frozen future into stitches, jacquards, padded surfaces, icy colours and organic winter details.

Built around six looks, the collection works across womenswear and menswear/unisex silhouettes, with a focus on cardigans, textured knit structures, stitch research and selected technical development.

Concept

The starting point is ice: fascinating, frightening and magnetic.

Modern Hibernation imagines a frozen future where garments protect the body through warmth, texture and construction. The collection combines glacial atmospheres with artificial accents, winter flowers and crystalline surfaces, creating a tension between coldness, softness and energy.

Knitwear and Stitch Research

Knitwear is the central language of the project.

The development explores lace stitch, bicolour relief diamonds, fur stitch, garter ribs, padded and matelassé effects, elongated stitches and brushed alpaca surfaces.

These textures translate the idea of ice into garments that feel cracked, padded, soft, protective and dimensional.

Modern Hibernation approved colour palette

Colour
Direction

The palette moves from light cream and frozen whites to glacial blues, deep aquatic tones and a soft earthy shade.

Lime and bright fuchsia act as artificial accents, bringing a sharper, synthetic energy into the cold winter atmosphere.

Technical Development

The project includes selected technical sheets for garments and knitwear pieces, focusing on stitch direction, gauge, volume, collar construction, rib structures, waistband construction, padding, matelassé texture, embroidery placement and garment function.

The technical development is intended as proof of design thinking and product interpretation, not as a complete industrial production package.

Look 1 - Relief Cardigan | Cracked-Ice Skirt

Look 1 - Relief Cardigan | Cracked-Ice Skirt fashion figure

A short cardigan and A-line skirt look translating the idea of ice through raised knit structures, ribbed construction and cracked matelassé texture.

The cardigan is developed in a combed wool blend, with wide ribbed collar and cuffs, raglan armholes and bicolour relief-diamond sleeves. The bottom buttoning detail creates openings through the rib structure.

The skirt works with a cracked-ice matelassé texture, a tubular waistband with internal elastic, an overlapped front panel, a deep slit and floral satin matelassé embroidery with strass chain applications.

Look 2 - Jacquard Cardigan | Lace Stitch | Fur-Stitch Jogger

Look 2 - Jacquard Cardigan | Lace Stitch | Fur-Stitch Jogger fashion figure

A layered knit look built around a jacquard cardigan, where an icy landscape becomes a wearable surface and is balanced by softer knitwear structures underneath.

The technical development focuses on a straight V-neck knit in alpaca blend with lace stitch, dropped shoulder, straight sleeves and tubular finishing on hem, neckline and cuffs.

The jogging pant is developed in wool blend with soft volume, garter ribs and fur-stitch contrasts placed along the leg. Double ribbed cuffs and waistband with internal elastic complete the unisex construction.

Look 5 - Matelassé Maxi Knit | Brushed Alpaca Bermuda fashion figure

A volume-focused knit look built around a maxi sweater with cracked-ice matelassé texture, conceived as a unisex garment and as a mini dress in womenswear.

The maxi knit is developed in wool blend with a dropped armhole, generous shoulder volume, deep neckline, double ribbed collar and ribbed finishing. The cracked-ice matelassé surface is enriched with floral satin embroidery and strass chain applications.

The bermuda is developed in brushed alpaca blend with a wide volume, front pleats, pressed crease and tubular waistband with internal elastic.

Jacquard
Graphics

Two jacquard developments expand the visual world of the collection.

The first translates an icy winter landscape into a mosaic-like graphic, with wolves, mountains and glacial colours creating a protective and almost mythological atmosphere.

The second works around frozen flowers, imagined as vivid organic elements preserved inside a glacier and re-emerging through the knitwear surface.

AI
Process Note

Artificial intelligence was used as a visual exploration tool for mood direction, title treatment and the two jacquard graphic developments.

Creative direction, selection, knitwear interpretation, stitch research, technical thinking and final editing remain human-led.
